How the Kp Index Works
The Kp index is a scale from 0 to 9 that indicates the intensity of visible Aurora Borealis activity. Scientists use the Kp number to forecast the likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights.
When the Kp index is 0, the geomagnetic field is quiet and no Auroral activity is expected. At Kp 1, very weak Auroral activity may be visible at high latitudes, like parts of Alaska and northern Canada.
Kp 2 means weak Auroral activity could be spotted in the far northern and southern parts of the world. At Kp 3, the Auroras become visible at mid-latitudes, so you may see the lights dancing across the sky in places like central Alaska, northern Europe and central Canada.
A Kp 5 forecast indicates strong Auroral activity, with vibrant lights swirling and shimmering overhead for long periods of time at mid-latitudes and lower latitudes. The lights may appear red, green, blue, yellow and purple. During storms at Kp 6 to Kp 9, Auroras can be seen at latitudes as low as New York and England. Kp 0-2: Minor Activity
At Kp 0-2, the Aurora is very faint and rare, visible only to those with a trained eye in extremely dark, secluded locations. Don't expect to see much.
Kp 3: Active

Kp 4-5: Storm Level

Vivid Coronas of light swirl and dance around the poles, often lasting through the night. The lights may be visible from highly populated areas, not just remote northern locations. Kp 5 activity is most likely around the peak of the solar cycle. During strong geomagnetic storms, the Kp index may spike to 7 or higher, producing intense auroral shows.

Kp 3: Aurora Becomes Visible
When the Kp index reaches level 3, the Aurora starts to become visible to the naked eye, especially at higher latitudes. Shimmering green and red lights may dance across parts of the sky, though still quite faint. The lights remain mostly stationary. At this level, the solar wind is beginning to disturb Earth's magnetic field enough for the aurora to be spotted, but activity is still minimal.
Kp 5 and Higher: Active Aurora!
Kp levels of 5 or higher mean the Aurora Borealis will likely be very active and bright. Curtains of green, red and blue lights may ripple and sway across much of the sky. The higher the Kp, the more widespread and dramatic the display. At the highest levels, the aurora can appear directly overhead and be seen dancing wildly across the entire sky. These higher levels occur when strong solar wind gusts disturb Earth's magnetic field, allowing charged particles to flood into the upper atmosphere and collide with gasses like oxygen and nitrogen to emit the colorful lights.
