Aurora Academy Tutorial Videos for Beginners

The Aurora Academy section of the Lumyros app offers tutorial videos for beginners on how to see and understand the Northern Lights. These short videos aim to educate you on the basics so you can have a memorable experience viewing the Aurora Borealis.

How the Northern Lights Form

A video explains how the Northern Lights are created by charged particles from the sun interacting with gasses in the Earth's atmosphere. When the sun is active, it releases high-energy particles that stream toward the Earth. These particles are drawn toward the magnetic north and south poles of our planet. As they flow into the atmosphere, they collide with gasses like oxygen and nitrogen, exciting the gasses and causing them to emit light. The color of the lights depends on which gasses are involved.

The Best Viewing Conditions

Another video details the ideal conditions for viewing the Aurora. The lights are often most visible around midnight when the sky is darkest. They tend to be brightest and most active around the equinoxes in March and September. Clear, moonless nights far from city lights provide the best views. The lights may last just a few minutes or continue for hours.

How to Interpret the Forecast

A helpful video explains how to read the 3-day and 27-day forecasts in the Lumyros app. The forecast shows predicted Aurora activity on an easy-to-read color scale from low to extreme. Check the forecast for your location and surrounding areas. The 3-day forecast gives more detail, showing activity predictions for each 3-hour time period so you know the best times to watch for the lights. The 27-day forecast provides a longer-range outlook to help with planning.

Photography Tips

For those wanting to capture photos of the Aurora, a video provides tips on settings and techniques to use with your smartphone camera. Use a steady tripod, set the camera to manual mode, and increase the ISO to at least 800. Frame your shot to include foreground objects like trees, buildings or landscapes. Take both vertical and horizontal photos to capture the movement and shapes of the lights.

The Aurora Academy videos in the Lumyros app provide a helpful introduction for newcomers to the Northern Lights. With the knowledge gained from these short tutorials, you'll be well on your way to becoming an Aurora Borealis expert and viewing the spectacular light show in person.
