In Roman mythology, Aurora was known as Aurora Consurgens ("riser at dawn") or Solis Sponsa ("bride of the sun"), while in Norse mythology she was known as Sol or Sunna. In these versions, it was said that she flew across the sky in a chariot pulled by golden horses that breathed fire into the night sky. This is why some cultures see her as being connected to Northern Lights—Aurora Borealis—because they bring light to a dark northern sky.

In Norse mythology, Aurora also plays an important role in Ragnarök (the end of days) where she is said to be one of two women who will give birth to sons who would become new rulers when all else has been destroyed.
